~ Wood ~

Meranti: A Philippine mahogany that is a true marine plywood branded as Hydrotek with a B.S. 1088 rating. This wood has a nice color, five layers and the faces have no "football patches". This is our preferred material for sides.

Fir: This wood is the strongest and lightest of all plywood. Fir is only available with "football" repair patches for the knots, not really that big of a deal especially if the boat is painted. Fir also will check (hairline cracks in the face veneer) without a fiberglass covering if not painted. We like to use fir for the bottom of boats because of the strength and am willing to live with the checking; after all it is the bottom.

Clear vertical grain Fir: A strong light wood used for the frames floor boards and sometimes for the stem.

White Oak: One of the best boat building woods. Used for chines, hand rails and stem.

Philippine Mahogany: Used for stem and handrails. Very strong and looks beautiful.

~ Fasteners & Adhesives ~

Epoxy: We use top quality epoxy both as glue and for a barrier coating.

Stainless Steel Fasteners: Used for all the screws and bolts.

Silicone Bronze Fasteners: Ring shank nails are used for attaching the sides to the frames.

Varnish and Paint: We use a wide variety of these, all are marine products and top quality.

3m 5200 Polyurethane: Used to seal the bottom, very strong and very permanent.

3m 101 Polysulfide: Used to seal the outside chine cap. Very strong semi permanent so it is possible to remove the chine.

~ Bottom Protection ~

UHMW: Ultra high molecular weight plastic. We use this for bottom protection as well as oar blocks. Bottom is sealed with epoxy before the UHMW is mechanically fastened. ~ OR ~
Fiberglass: We use 21 oz. cloth and epoxy mixed with graphite.
